The Randy Knott Art Fly 2 - 2012

The Art-Fly is an exciting art form based on the hand-tied fishing fly.  Local artist, Teresa (Sita) Mailath, has evolved her 29 year passion for exotic art-fly production from a hobby into her new business.
Gems of Different Kind produces unique, one of a kind art-flies that are now being sold around the world.

She took a fly tying course years ago in Port Hope ON: through the Ganaraska Fly Tying Club.
She remember's on her granddad's farm in Guelph, splicing feather's to make arrows.

Years later on a trip back from Europe she saw an article to do with fly tying and told herself "amazing", these could be made exotic & quite unique..hey!... art on a hook.
And - The Grandpa Art Fly or Amanda's Art Fly or Biggest Fish Art Fly Caught, to name it after a friend is such a special added feature. We are after all, unique as well. A plaque can be put on the Trophies or Teresa can sign the back of the frame with the person's name.

Teresa had her art flies shown in the Port Hope Art Gallery year's ago & in Art Space Peterborough
two years ago with many other's for the 12 days of Christmas Special Showing.

Teresa has been gaining recognition for her hand-tied flies.  She carefully selects only the best and most interesting natural feathers based on their colour variation, shape and exotic appeal.  “Nature provides an enormous variety of exquisite colour in bird feathers” she says, “just like in flowers.”  Once she has completed each fly, it is then mounted and encased behind glass in a handcrafted solid wood framed box.

These flies are becoming popular as gifts for fly fishing enthusiasts and are also being purchased as trophies for fishing events and as corporate gifts.  One of Teresa’s favourite pieces is one she produced for a wedding gift in Ohio, USA named Harmony and Bliss.  The friend of the couple wanted a personal and unique gift to recognize the groom’s passion for fishing.  Her work also graces Buckingham Palace & the Canadian Parliament Buildings and Teresa has received letters of recognition from both. Now over 65% art flies sold go to people that have nothing to do with fishing, they want something different, hanging in their children's room or
for a new deco hanging in their halls, in cottages or Dr's offices, on shelves, book ends on the mantels & computer rooms, the list goes on.
Teresa's art flies have gone to Switzerland, Germany, Africa, USA, England, Scotland and to alot of area's in Canada, Calgary, B.C., Toronto, Ottawa, etc.

Articles have been written up in the Cobourg Daily Star, Port Hope Snap, Peterborough Examiner, Snap as well & other surrounding areas. Teresa has recieved many letter's of recognition over the year's and treasure's them all. Teresa has donated art flies to save wet land causes & to the Canadian Fly Forum Toronto that have been auctioned off for charities. Teresa has been on Chex T.V. and in Real Fishing Magazine & Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine.

Teresa is a graduate gemologist who worked in Europe for several years in the jewelry industry.  “I have been able to adapt and apply my creative background in gemology to the unique work I do in my fly-fishing art.  My art-flies have my own personal trademark style.  Each piece represents its own story that results from my passion and attention to detail.”

Teresa is grateful for the enormous support she’s received from so many people in Peterborough.  “I’d like to thank the CFDC, Business Advisory Centre, and the many friends and professionals in the community who have helped me establish my business.  Their support and expertise has been invaluable to me.”
